This elevated level of skill represents the gold standard in the aesthetician career path.

Within this specialized role, advanced aestheticians can perform transformative treatments that deliver noticeable results for clients with various skin concerns. They become trusted advisors who can analyze skin conditions, recommend personalized treatment plans, and execute sophisticated techniques that were once available only in medical settings.

As the beauty industry continues to evolve, the line between traditional spa services and medical aesthetics grows increasingly blurred, creating exciting opportunities for those ready to advance their skills and knowledge.

The Advanced Aesthetician Role

The advanced aesthetician job description encompasses a range of specialized responsibilities focused on providing high-level skin treatments and therapeutic applications. These professionals serve as skin health experts who combine clinical knowledge with artistic technique to deliver transformative results for their clients.

  • Performing comprehensive skin analysis and consultations – This foundational responsibility enables aestheticians to identify specific skin concerns and develop customized treatment plans tailored to each client’s unique needs.
  • Administering specialized facial treatments – From microcurrent therapy to RF treatments and hydrodermabrasion, mastery of these advanced aesthetician techniques allows professionals to address everything from aging concerns to problematic skin conditions.
  • Conducting microneedling and advanced exfoliation procedures – These collagen-inducing treatments require precision and proper technique to safely create controlled micro-injuries that stimulate the skin’s natural healing response.
  • Providing body sculpting and contouring services – Beyond facial care, advanced aestheticians often offer specialized body treatments that require knowledge of anatomy and specific application methods.
  • Maintaining treatment protocols and safety standards – As American Med Spa Association notes, “It is the moral obligation of the provider to ‘do no harm'”[1], making safety knowledge and complication management essential components of the role.

With a population of over 23 million, according to the US Census Bureau*, Florida’s beauty industry is vastly flourishing. A major segment of this industry falls under esthetics, and as the state’s population continues to remain large, the demand for these services continues. Among many different branches of esthetics, medical esthetics is thriving due to clients increasing desire to address cosmetic and dermatological concerns.

What is a Paramedical Esthetician?

A paramedical esthetician plays a significant role within the medical field. They assist dermatologists and other healthcare professionals with the treatments of patients. These patients often require care for conditions such as severe burns, reconstructive or cosmetic surgery, treating skin conditions like acne or psoriasis, and anti-aging procedures.

In contrast, a traditional esthetician primarily focuses on enhancing the appearance and health of skin by offering services such as facials, waxing, chemical peels, body treatments and makeup applications.

Benefits to Becoming a Paramedical Esthetician

As a paramedical esthetician, you will be able to grow into a highly rewarding career with a variety of key advantages:

Specialized Knowledge, Training, and Skillsets: As a paramedical esthetician, you will have advanced knowledge, training, and skills that will set you apart from a traditional esthetician. This expertise enables you to provide more targeted and impactful treatments.

Building Confidence in Others: Medical estheticians play a critical role in helping individuals gain their confidence again. Often, they will work with patients who have serious skin conditions such as scaring from surgeries or trauma. The ability to make a unique positive impact on someone’s self-esteem through their appearance can be incredibly fulfilling as a medical esthetician.

Ongoing Learning & Development: The paramedical esthetician field is constantly evolving as new treatments, technologies, and industry trends change. This dynamic environment offers endless opportunities for you to expand your knowledge, refine your skills, and adapt to the latest industry trends, paving the way for long-term career growth.

Flexible Work Settings: A key feature of a career as a medical esthetician is the ability to work in a variety of settings. Whether you’re working in medical spas, salons, medical offices, or hospitals, you can have the flexibility to select your preferred work environment that aligns with your personal goals and interests.

Career & Financial Growth: As demand for specialized skincare services continues to rise, medical estheticians are highly sought after, especially for post-surgery treatments and medical procedures. Due to their advanced training and skillsets, paramedical estheticians can often charge higher rates than a traditional esthetician. Additionally, by having the ability to work in a medical office or clinic setting can lead to higher compensation.

Daily Role Responsibilities

What is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the fundamental function of removing hair permanently from anyone regardless of their skin color or hair type. Unlike other hair removal processes, electrolysis is the only treatment that lasts a lifetime.

This process permanently kills the growth of hair follicle cells, which in turn prevents them from growing back. This treatment is performed by an electrologist who inserts a fine needle into the opening of a natural hair follicle alongside the hair shaft and applies a tiny electrical current to destroy the cell where the hair growth occurs.

The hair follicle can be destroyed in a few different ways depending on the type of medical electrolysis device being used. This can include the following:

  • Galvanic Electrolysis: This is the process of utilizing an electric current to make a chemical reaction, which in turn eliminates the hair follicle cell from regrowing. It is effective however it can take longer to complete compared to other method options.
  • Thermolysis: Also known as short-wave, this method uses heat to prevent the hair follicle cell from reproducing by applying a high-frequency electrical current. Thermolysis can be done fast by using a higher intensity current or it can be slowed down over a longer period with a lower intensity current.
  • The Blend: This method takes galvanic and thermolysis together to produce a method that takes advantage of all the benefits from each individual method. This combination allows for balanced and effective treatment.
