Embarking on a career as a medical esthetician offers the rewarding opportunity to combine a passion for beauty with the fulfillment of enhancing patient well-being. In this high-demand field, professionals are not only experts in skincare but also equipped with the knowledge to perform advanced therapeutic treatments. Understanding how to become a medical esthetician is essential for those aiming to enter this specialized area of healthcare. This guide is designed to provide you with a clear pathway, highlighting the importance of selecting the right medical esthetician school, program, and courses that align with your career aspirations.

The journey to becoming a medical esthetician encompasses several critical steps, beginning with comprehensive education and training. Your path will likely start at an accredited medical esthetician school where you’ll engage in a program or course tailored to the unique skills and knowledge required in medical aesthetics. Following your formal education, gaining practical experience through internships or apprenticeships is invaluable.

Additionally, obtaining certification and licensure is a crucial milestone, signifying your competence and professionalism in the field. This article will guide you through each of these steps, providing insights into educational requirements, practical experience, and the certification process to help you establish a successful career as a medical esthetician.

Understanding the Role of a Medical Esthetician

As a medical esthetician, you play a crucial role in helping patients with various skin conditions, traumas, and aging concerns. Your primary responsibilities revolve around administering specialized treatments and providing expert guidance to promote skin health and rejuvenation.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Perform advanced aesthetic treatments: You will be trained to conduct procedures such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser therapy, and the application of potent acids. These treatments aim to address issues like fine lines, wrinkles, acne, acne scarring, and skin discoloration.
  2. Support patients undergoing medical treatments: In hospitals and clinics, you will assist patients who are undergoing operations or medical treatments that involve the skin. This includes instructing patients on how to care for sensitive healing skin, reduce swelling, and manage post-treatment concerns.
  3. Provide emotional support and boost confidence: Medical estheticians offer emotional relief to patients undergoing long-term treatment care. You will play a role in boosting the confidence of individuals who may be self-conscious about their appearance due to skin conditions or trauma.
  4. Conduct consultations and skin analyses: As a medical esthetician, you will be responsible for conducting consultations, analyzing clients’ skin concerns, and creating personalized treatment plans and product recommendations.
  5. Maintain accurate documentation: Completing required intake information, maintaining client files, and documenting treatments and progress are essential aspects of your role.

Skills Required

To excel as a medical esthetician, you will need to develop the following skills:

  1. Comprehensive knowledge of skincare products, ingredients, and their benefits.
  2. Proficiency in performing various aesthetic treatments, such as microneedling, laser hair removal, photofacials, chemical peels, and more.
  3. Familiarity with injectables and their applications.
  4. Excellent communication and customer service skills to build strong client relationships.
  5. Attention to detail and adherence to safety and sanitation protocols.
  6. Ability to stay updated on current trends, issues, and best practices in cosmetic treatments and laser therapies.

By understanding the key responsibilities and developing the necessary skills, you will be well-equipped to navigate the dynamic field of medical esthetics and provide exceptional care to your patients.

Educational Requirements

To become a licensed medical esthetician, you need to complete an accredited education program and fulfill specific training requirements. Here are the key educational requirements:

Necessary Degrees and Certifications

  • Esthetician License: Most states require you to obtain an esthetician license to practice as a medical esthetician. The licensing process typically involves completing an approved training program and passing written and practical exams.
  • Cosmetology or Esthetician Program: You can enroll in a cosmetology or esthetician program at a vocational school, community college, or specialized esthetics institution. These programs provide a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on training in areas such as skincare treatments, hair removal, makeup application, and safety protocols.
  • Certificate or Diploma: Many schools offer certificate or diploma programs in esthetics, which can be completed in 9 to 12 months. These programs cover topics like anatomy, physiology, skin analysis, and advanced treatments like chemical peels and microdermabrasion.
  • Associate’s Degree: Some community colleges offer associate’s degree programs in esthetics, which typically take two years to complete. These programs provide more in-depth training and may include courses in business management and marketing.

When selecting a school or program, consider factors such as accreditation, curriculum, hands-on training opportunities, and job placement assistance. It’s also essential to ensure that the program meets the licensing requirements in your state.

Gaining Practical Experience

Practical experience is an essential component of your journey to becoming a medical esthetician. It allows you to apply the theoretical knowledge gained during your education and develop the necessary skills to excel in this field. There are two primary avenues for gaining practical experience: internships and apprenticeships, and clinical training.

Internships and Apprenticeships

Internships and apprenticeships provide invaluable hands-on training under the guidance of experienced professionals. These opportunities allow you to:

  1. Observe and learn from seasoned medical estheticians in real-world settings.
  2. Gain exposure to various skin conditions, treatments, and client interactions.
  3. Develop your skills in performing procedures such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser treatments.
  4. Build your professional network and establish connections within the industry.

Many esthetician programs include internship or apprenticeship components, allowing you to accumulate the required hours of practical experience. If your program does not offer this opportunity, you can actively seek internships or apprenticeships at medical spas, dermatology clinics, or plastic surgery centers.

Clinical Training

Clinical training is another crucial aspect of gaining practical experience. During this phase, you will have the opportunity to work directly with clients under the supervision of licensed professionals. Clinical training typically involves:

  1. Conducting client consultations and skin analyses.
  2. Performing various aesthetic treatments, such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser hair removal.
  3. Assisting medical professionals during procedures like Botox injections or dermal fillers.
  4. Learning about pre- and post-treatment care, as well as managing potential side effects.
  5. Practicing effective communication and client education techniques.

Many medical esthetician programs incorporate clinical training components, allowing you to work in a controlled environment and receive feedback from instructors. This hands-on experience is invaluable in preparing you for real-world scenarios and building your confidence in providing safe and effective treatments.

It is important to note that the specific requirements for internships, apprenticeships, and clinical training may vary depending on your state’s regulations and the program you choose. Be sure to research and comply with all necessary guidelines to ensure you meet the practical experience requirements for licensure or certification.

Certification and Licensure

After completing your education and gaining practical experience, the next crucial step is obtaining the necessary certification and licensure to practice as a medical esthetician. This process ensures you meet the required standards and regulations in your state.

Examination Process

Most states require you to pass both a written theory examination and a practical examination to become licensed. The examinations assess your knowledge and skills in various areas, including:

  1. Skin anatomy and physiology
  2. Skin analysis and consultation
  3. Facial treatments and massage techniques
  4. Hair removal methods
  5. Makeup application
  6. Safety and sanitation protocols

The examinations may be administered by the state board or a third-party testing agency. It’s essential to thoroughly prepare for these exams by reviewing your course materials and practicing your practical skills.

State-Specific Requirements

Licensure requirements for medical estheticians vary from state to state. Some key factors to consider include:

  1. Education and Training Hours: Most states require you to complete a specific number of training hours, typically ranging from 300 to 1,000 hours, from an accredited esthetician program.
  2. Age and Education Level: Many states have minimum age and education level requirements, such as being at least 16 or 17 years old and having completed a certain grade level or obtaining a high school diploma or equivalent.
  3. Fees: You will need to pay application fees, examination fees, and licensing fees, which can vary significantly between states.
  4. Reciprocity and Endorsement: Some states offer reciprocity or endorsement for licensed estheticians from other states, allowing you to transfer your license without retaking the examinations. However, the requirements for reciprocity or endorsement can differ.
  5. Continuing Education: Several states require licensed estheticians to complete a certain number of continuing education hours every renewal period to maintain their license.

It’s crucial to research the specific requirements in the state where you plan to practice. Contact the relevant state board or licensing authority to obtain the most up-to-date information and ensure you meet all the necessary criteria.

By successfully completing the examination process and fulfilling your state’s licensure requirements, you’ll be legally authorized to practice as a medical esthetician and provide professional skincare services to your clients.

Conclusion

The pathway to becoming a medical esthetician is rigorous, demanding comprehensive education, hands-on training, and success in certification and licensure. We have explored the significant steps: selecting the right education at a medical esthetician school, undergoing programs and courses designed to equip students with necessary skills, and the indispensable need for internships or apprenticeships to gain practical experience. Moreover, the journey culminates in a critical phase of obtaining certification and licensure, ensuring adherence to state regulations and standards of practice.

As aspiring medical estheticians navigate through these stages, they contribute to an esteemed field dedicated to improving patient well-being and enhancing the beauty industry with specialized knowledge. The implications of this rigorous training not only foster professional growth but also promise substantive contributions to healthcare and esthetics.

Ensuring a solid foundation through education, practical experience, and official certification paves the way for a fulfilling career in medical esthetics, benefitting both professionals and the individuals they serve.

Hey there self-confessed skincare fanatics – skin care isn’t just about treating existing damage but also about proactively avoiding any damage in the future. We believe everyone can achieve beautiful, healthy skin, regardless of their budget. So if this sounds like something you鈥檙e interested in learning more about, come with us on our journey through proactive skin care techniques. We will show how studying esthetics at 黄瓜社区 empowers potential future professionals to help people fight back against the signs of aging, sun and environmental damage, allowing them to harness their inner glow.

The importance of skincare

When it comes to our skin, taking a proactive approach is the key to not only reversing the signs of aging and sun damage but also preventing further harm. Our skin is our largest organ and requires preventive, proactive and reactive care in order to stay healthy, glowing and youthful. We鈥檝e read for years how exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays can cause skin damage, such as sunburn, premature aging, and even skin cancer. Treating damaged skin for dryness, discoloration, hyperpigmentation and wrinkles can help improve the overall appearance and health of our skin.

One of the key areas of focus for students at 黄瓜社区 is learning how to protect their clients’ skin from the harmful effects of the sun and reverse sun damage. Students are taught the latest and time-tested techniques, including skin analysis, custom facials, exfoliation, micro-needling, oxygen infusion facials, and dermaplaning.

Skin Analysis

Skin analysis is a critical first step in any skincare treatment. Students at 黄瓜社区 learn to analyze their clients’ skin type, sensitivity, and overall health. By analyzing the skin, students can determine the appropriate products and techniques that will be used to protect and rejuvenate and restore the skin. This includes selecting the right sunscreen for the client’s skin type and recommending products that help reverse sun damage, such as serums that contain vitamin C or hyaluronic acid.

Custom Facials

Custom facials are tailored to the individual needs of each client, based on their skin type and any specific concerns they may have. For example, a client with dry skin may require a moisturizing facial, while a client with oily skin may benefit from a deep-cleansing facial. Custom facials can also include the use of masks, peels, and other treatments that help eliminate toxins and promote collagen production and reverse sun damage.

Exfoliation

Exfoliation is an important technique for removing dead skin cells and promoting cell turnover. Students in 黄瓜社区’s Master Aesthetician program are taught how to perform the different types of exfoliation, including chemical peels and microdermabrasion. Chemical peels use alpha or beta hydroxy acids to dissolve dead skin cells and fade age spots, as well as unclog and minimize pores.

Microdermabrasion uses a small wand with micro beadlets to gently remove the outer layer of skin as it stimulates production of new skin cells, boosting collagen and protein production for a smoother skin appearance. Both of these techniques can help to reduce the appearance of sun damage, fine lines, and wrinkles.

Microneedling

Microneedling is another technique that students at 黄瓜社区 learn. This technique involves using a small device with tiny needles to create microchannels in the skin. The microchannels stimulate the skin’s natural healing process, which can help to reduce the appearance of sun damage and other skin concerns, such as acne scars and hyperpigmentation.

Oxygen Infusion Facials

Oxygen infusion facials are a relatively new technique that has gained popularity in the beauty industry. This technique involves infusing oxygen and other nutrients into the skin, which can help to improve circulation, promote cell turnover, and reduce the appearance of sun damage. Students at 黄瓜社区 learn how to perform oxygen infusion facials, as well as how to select the appropriate skincare products for their clients.

Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning involves using a small blade to remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells and fine facial hair. This technique can help to improve the texture and tone of the skin, as well as reduce the appearance of sun damage and fine lines.

Here at 黄瓜社区, we provide you with the hands-on training, practical spa experience, and specialized techniques it takes to pursue a successful career. By learning how to perform skin analysis, custom facials, exfoliation, micro-needling, oxygen infusion facials, and dermaplaning, students can provide their clients with the best possible skin care treatments. This personalized approach to skincare allows students at 黄瓜社区 to help their clients achieve healthy, glowing skin that looks its best.

As we say goodbye to one beautiful year, we welcome the next one with open arms, as well as hands that are ready to work their magic and make others feel fantastic about themselves. 2022 brought many beauty trends that enhanced our courses and student knowledge at 黄瓜社区, and 2023 promises to usher in a whole new wave of trends to benefit our students and their future clients. Let鈥檚 take a closer look at how health and beauty trends have amplified what we are learning and implementing in the classroom.

2022 in Review

Hair that鈥檚 out there

Hair that reached new heights saw an uptick in popularity this year, as high puff hairstyle searches have grown 165% from October 2019 per Pinterest. A renewed interest in natural hair texture is behind the growing interest, with short natural hairstyles, natural hair bun styles, and two puffs natural hair hairstyles leading the trending pack. Studies also show that fashionistas were looking to rebel this year, with “hard-to-miss hair” styles like octopus hair, mullets and bob cut wigs seeing the light of day again. Shaved head dye designs and short hair mohawks were hot in action and definitely made a big statement this year. Our Master Hair Design program allows our students to get practice in a real salon, so they can get the experience and sense of what鈥檚 trending at that exact moment.

Totally nailing it

It seems that nail art has taken to a new high each year, and 2022 was no exception. Individual expression of beauty is not a new trend, but it is reaching new heights in the nail area. Landscape-style designs and galaxy nail art adorned many a digit this year, with ocean, desert, and Aurora-themed nails also rising in popularity. Social media has helped fuel the phenomenon, with nail art images and videos that seemingly get more and more unique. It has never been a more exciting or profitable time to be a nail artist, and 黄瓜社区鈥檚 Nail Technician program takes you through all the essentials you need to nail for the profession.

Making room for the men

Each year, the male beauty industry intensifies, and in 2022 we saw a massive expansion in the range of products and services for men. With everything from manicures to home grooming, this industry is expected to reach $277 billion by 2030. Icons like Harry Styles helped to make male nail polish and cosmetics a norm for men, and with the number of male beauty influencers and brand ambassadors on the rise, not only are gender norms being challenged but a whole new market opportunity is being created for our students to excel at. We have definitely seen a rise in enrollment for our Barbering program, aimed specifically at the male beauty experience.

Skincare is queen

Rather than just hide blemishes and imperfections, this year we were determined to fix them at their root cause. With many working from home and finding less of a need for makeup, our focus was pivoted to excellent skin care. YouTube saw a rise in skincare tutorials over cosmetic videos, and we are even seeing an emergence of hybrid products that combine makeup properties with skincare ingredients.

What鈥檚 to Come in 2023

Beauty & tech, the new 鈥渋t鈥 couple

One thing that never goes out of style for consumers and clients is value. As they look to make the most out of their dollar, we are seeing an increase in money being put toward beauty technology. Technical advancements such as 3D printing, gene editing, and wearable devices are taking center stage as their efficiency and potency help to develop new products and processes.

Putting the care in self-care

2020 rang in a rough couple of years for most of us, so it鈥檚 no wonder that self-care routines are at an all-time high. While the treatments themselves are important, it鈥檚 also the value of connecting and community that will make self-care at the forefront of beauty regimens. Helping others is at the forefront of wellness this coming year, with new ways to help all of us feel and live better. This means more holistic practices as well as treatments for habits that support beauty such as sleep and circulation.

Getting digitally gorgeous

As we step into the future, consumers are looking for the next generation of experience, which entails a merger of online and offline formats – everything from digital avatars to the incorporation of the metaverse to virtual reality, which will go from being a very unique experience to just the regular norm. 鈥淧hygital鈥 (physical + digital) experiences will lead us to a new way of connecting with clients.

It鈥檚 truly a blossoming time to be a part of the beauty industry, as new trends bring endless possibilities. Does that sound like a dream come true to you? Come visit us to see all that is waiting for you in the world of beauty.

You鈥檝e probably seen plenty of guys growing out their facial hair for 鈥淢ovember鈥 – but what is behind the trendy charity movement? November is Men鈥檚 Health Awareness month, a time to raise awareness of a wide range of men鈥檚 health issues. Historically, men, the supposed 鈥渢ougher鈥 of the two genders, have ignored their mental and physical well-being for too long. So this month, we鈥檙e focused on all the ways that men can stay mentally healthy through self-care. As men鈥檚 salons, spas and barbershops are seeing their biggest boom yet, our students are studying up on all the latest trends in men鈥檚 care.

Man receiving a haircut.

Men鈥檚 Massage – Because They Have Bodies Too!

Massages for men are nothing new, but the amount and variety of treatment options out there are. With traditional massage therapy, there鈥檚 a wide array of therapeutic services that restore men鈥檚 minds and bodies, which include:

  • Hot stone massage
  • Spa treatments
  • Energy-based bodywork
  • Shiatsu and Ayurveda
  • Clinical massage
  • Reflexology
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Chair massage
  • Body wraps
  • CBD oil service application
  • Aromatherapy

We teach these techniques at 黄瓜社区 because we know how in-demand massage therapists can be, and how niching yourself in the massage industry can bring many opportunities. Whether a sports injury, chronic ailment, or just some much-needed destressing, massages can bring a whole world of wellness to men this month.

Men Face Their Skincare Fears

It鈥檚 time for men to embrace the art of skincare. From acne to scarring, razor burn to dry skin, men鈥檚 faces need love too, and the industry is taking notice. Before, products and services for men were pretty straightforward and simple, but with more men prioritizing healthy, younger-looking skin, the options have opened up greatly. There are plenty of treatments available for a number of conditions that the skin care and aesthetician students in our academy are currently learning, such as:

  • Skin analysis
  • Customized facials
  • Facial massage with alternative massage techniques
  • Hair removal
  • Exfoliation
  • Facial machines
  • Micro-needling
  • Oxygen Infusion Facials
  • Dermaplaning
  • Electrolysis
  • The science of product ingredients
  • Advanced Therapeutic applications and more

All of these treatments are beneficial to issues that men experience every day as they age, and too often ignore. At both campuses, we ensure that our students get the expert training they need to be masters at their craft.

Barbering tools laid out on a black surface.

A Cut Above

And of course, we can鈥檛 mention Movember and men鈥檚 wellness without talking about a trip to the barber. A barber is a professional in the hair industry that specializes in cutting and styling men鈥檚 hair, as well as other grooming related to male facial hair. The barbering profession dates back to the early days in the U.S., and many shops are still steeped in the tradition of equipment, techniques, and atmosphere of the olden days. Back then, barbers required skill, training, a steady hand, and a keen eye. Today鈥檚 expert barbers possess all those skills and are also state-licensed. They do more than cut hair – they trim, taper, and shape using various tools. Along with other facial grooming and cutting services, we teach our budding barbers to be experts at:

  • Shampooing
  • Hairstyling
  • Hair coloring
  • Scalp, neck, or facial massages
  • Hot towel shave

Man receiving a facial shave to his beard.

How a man chooses to wear his hair reveals who he is as a person. A trip to the barber is an excellent way to nail down the style that best fits you. Taking care of your hair shows the world that you value yourself – if you neglect it, it will show. Our accredited barber program provides expertise in the theory of barbering, as well as hands-on training for students so that their clients always leave extremely satisfied with their appearance.

As more men鈥檚 spas and salons hit the scene to meet the demand, we鈥檙e seeing more opportunities than ever to make a splash in men鈥檚 wellness.

If you鈥檙e interested in helping men to look and feel their best – not just this month, but as a potential new career, we invite you to our campus to learn more and make an impact. 黄瓜社区 is proud to hold the standard of excellence for men鈥檚 professionals and be the school of choice for training future salon and spa masters.

Wedding season is upon us, and whether it鈥檚 a public figure or one of your good friends, we鈥檙e sure you鈥檝e seen some postponed ceremonies here and there in recent years. Weddings in 2022, however, are back in full force, and we鈥檝e rounded up the season’s top beauty trends for future beauty professionals and brides-to-be.

Overall, bridal looks this year are leaning more towards the 鈥渟oft glam鈥 makeup style, and wispy, tousled hair. It鈥檚 out with heavy contour and tight curls, and in with the easygoing, natural bride.

1. Dewy, Glowy, Luminous Skin

Dewy skin starts with a good skincare routine using products that include healthy, natural ingredients. In the days and weeks leading up to your big day, it may benefit your skin to seek out certain treatments to ensure your skin has been given a total reboot and can work as a clean canvas for makeup. We鈥檝e gathered some healthy skin practices here.

Dewy, luminous makeup looks often include a hydrating primer, a light, thin layer of lightweight foundation, and, of course, a highlighter. For the best results, a cream or balm highlighter is recommended. It鈥檚 also a good idea to use a cream or liquid blush, contour, and eyeshadow for an even better dewy look.

2. Effortless, Tousled Hair

Less is officially more. The worn-in bun and wispy ponytail have entered the bridal scene and they鈥檙e here to stay. 鈥淏rides are loving the tousled updo as it鈥檚 so romantic and soft looking, which really fits in line with many bridal gowns.鈥 .

Bride and groom.

3. Earth-Toned Smokey Eye

Recently, more natural, earthy tones have dominated the makeup looks of brides. The smokey eye look gives brides the dramatic, romantic look they need, while the lighter earth tones balance out the look for a subtle, effortless effect.

Mastering the art of the smokey eye is one of the many makeup skills our students learn in the Makeup and Skincare program.

4. Full, But Natural-Looking Lashes

The big, dramatic fake lash look is no longer. More natural lashes, and even partial lashes, come off as more romantic and flawless. 鈥淢ost brides want their eyes to pop, but not be overdone, so makeup artists usually go for a lash style that is timeless and accentuates the natural shape of their eye,鈥 , a beauty retail education manager, says.

The ideal lengths Murphy suggests are 陆 or 戮, which create a soft, elegant look and flatter every eye shape.

If you鈥檙e interested in pursuing a career in the makeup and beauty industry, then bridal makeup trends are important to stay up to date with. Bridal makeup artistry and bridal hair styling are top jobs for beauty professionals.

Not only will you learn makeup and skin care techniques in the classroom through our Makeup and Skin Care program at 黄瓜社区, but you鈥檒l also gain real-world experience working with actual clients in our on-site salon. You will also perform complete facials and skin treatments in our on-site student salon.

Similarly, if you鈥檙e interested in our Master Hair Design program, you will work with real clientele in our on-site student salon and will use world-class product brands such as Matrix and OPI.

June is Pride Month, a time to honor the LGBTQA+ community. To celebrate this important month, 黄瓜社区 wants to put the spotlight on some of the icons who have helped to shape the beauty industry in the past and present times.

The world is full of so many unique, diverse and talented people, and the beauty industry is making waves in celebrating the diversity of the world. Let鈥檚 take a look at just a few icons that have paved the way.

Pride flag.

1. Mugler

Since 1974, Thierry Mugler has been breaking down boundaries with his unique fashion and fragrances, while also advocating for the LGBTQ+ community. Mugler is a proud gay man and his influence on the beauty industry is undeniable.

He showcased transgender models on his runways in the 1980s鈥揳n unpopular course of action at this time and still not common in the industry today.

Mugler鈥檚 determination to proudly boost the LGBTQA+ community to center stage through fashion, makeup, hair, and more, is what sets him apart.

2. NikkieTutorials

Dutch make-up artist, Nikkie de Jager, but more widely known as NikkieTutorials, has been leaving her mark on the beauty industry since her first YouTube video in 2009. Not only that, she is a proud, openly transgender beauty guru. Her videos have millions of views, and she has worked with industry icons like Marc Jacobs and Kylie Jenner.

Nikkie has not only been loved for her incredible makeup talent and amazing beauty looks, but for sharing her story openly and honestly with her audience. Nikkie has become an icon for the trans community.

3. Johnathan Van Ness

There鈥檚 no denying the impact that Johnathan Van Ness has had on the world, but specifically the LGBTQA+ community. Van Ness, known for being the dedicated and outgoing hairstylist on Queer Eye, found instant fame. Their likable personality and advocacy for the LGBTQA+ community has not gone unnoticed. The reality star and hair aficionado is open about navigating life with HIV, and being a committed anti-homophobia activist.

鈥淚 think what I would say is the most universal thing that I鈥檝e learned is that at the end of the day, we all really want to be loved,鈥 鈥淲e really want to be loved, and we want to be loved for just living our authentic truth, which looks different to everyone.鈥

4. Way Bandy

Often hailed as one of the world鈥檚 best and first makeup artists, Way Bandy led the way for modern-day make-up artists. Bandy was renowned for his flawless and precise signature makeup style. A few celebrities on his client roster include Elizabeth Taylor, Diana Ross, Farrah Fawcett and First Lady Nancy Reagan.

Bandy was also an avid activist, committed to ending the harmful stigma around AIDS and the queer community. When Bandy died of the disease in 1986, he directed that his cause of death be mentioned in his obituary, unashamed.

Way Bandy鈥檚 legacy lives on within the beauty community. He influenced a generation of beauty artists and defined what it means to be an MUA. It鈥檚 been said that Way Bandy inspired the legendary 90鈥檚 makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin, another icon that changed the face of beauty and makeup as we know it today and is still considered one of the best makeup artists of the modern day.

This is just a short list of beauty influences in the LGBTQA+ community, and as times change and barriers are broken down, honoring the community鈥檚 influence on style and beauty can grow to become the norm. It is important to us, at 黄瓜社区, to ensure that all our students, staff, and friends enter our doors feeling safe, accepted, and free to be their best creative selves.

Keeping Skin Health in the Forefront of Education

Can you feel it? The air is getting warmer and the UV index is getting higher, which means it鈥檚 time to adjust your makeup and skin care routine. In most places, summer means longer days under the sun and potentially hot, humid, or dry weather. Because the weather directly affects your skin, which is the largest organ in your body, it鈥檚 imperative that you modify your routine to keep your skin healthy, glowing, and safe from harmful UV rays.

Whether you choose to pursue a career as a Paramedical Esthetician, Master Aesthetician or our Skin Care programs, 黄瓜社区 students are fully educated on all of the negative and positive effects of sun exposure and the latest treatments for anti-aging, sun damage and maintaining the health of your skin.

Here are a few tips on how to beat the summer sun:

Rule Number One: SPF

The American Dermatology Association recommends using an SPF of 30 or higher, and searching for a sunscreen that uses the label 鈥渂road spectrum.鈥 Broad spectrum means the lotion protects against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are the rays that prematurely age your skin, causing wrinkles and age spots, while UVB rays cause sunburn. Overexposure to both can lead to freckles, age spots, melasma (hyperpigmentation) and skin cancer. Reapply your SPF often, and include your lips by applying a lip balm that contains broad spectrum SPF in it. Today there are many products beyond sunscreen and sunblock that contain the same protection including makeup foundation, moisturizing lotions and even apparel.

Don’t Stop Moisturizing, But Rethink Your Product

Even if your skin gets a little more oily during the warmer months, you should not stop moisturizing. Instead, adopt a multi-faceted moisturizer that is lightweight, non-scented, and includes SPF. It鈥檚 important to choose a lightweight product because heavier moisturizers can clog pores and cause inflammation or acne, especially in the summertime.

“Moisturizers reestablish the stratum corneum, your outermost layer of the skin, which protects from harmful pollutants and chemicals and prevents further irritation or dryness,” says , a board-certified dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon. So don鈥檛 forgo the extra moisture, instead, be sure to replenish your skin with the right product.

Lighten Up Your Makeup Routine

It鈥檚 the season for letting your skin breathe. During summer, wearing heavy makeup can feel like an unnecessary extra layer. You can elect to use either an SPF-infused tinted moisturizer or lighter weight foundation in lieu of a full coverage foundation. Heavy makeup tends to clog pores and could potentially cause dry skin, acne, flaky skin, or more unwanted side effects.

Pro tip: Invest in makeup that is non-comedogenic, which means it鈥檚 less likely to clog pores. A lightweight, non-clogging option is SPF powders, however, keep in mind the need to ensure full coverage and reapplying often, especially when outdoors, for uncompromised protection all day long.

Keep Exfoliating

Your skin will need to be reset after the sweat, SPF, and oil begin to take over. Sunscreen is important, and sweat is the body鈥檚 natural way of cooling off, but both can clog pores if you鈥檙e not washing and exfoliating your skin properly at the end of the day.

Exfoliating 1-2 times per week helps to unclog pores and reduce blemishes, and it essentially wipes the day away. However, it鈥檚 best to not exfoliate if you鈥檙e sunburned, and it鈥檚 recommended by dermatologists that you don鈥檛 over-exfoliate, especially if you have dry skin.

Two categories of products to avoid when exfoliating: brushes and pads that are designed for repeat use as they accumulate bacteria over time and can lead to skin infections and acne. Also, avoid gels and creams with microbeads that may be bad for the environment and have been banned in many countries. Opt instead for microbead and plastic-free options, or natural products with biodegradable alternatives to microbeads.

Love Your Skin

Healthy skin care practices should start at infancy to protect from sun damage, maintain elasticity, and minimize wrinkles and acne over time. Start early! Choose sunblock and sunscreen that contain zero Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Avobenzone or Retinyl Palmitate (Retinyl is a form of Vitamin A and has great benefits, however, when exposed to the sun it can lead to skin cancer).

Add a little Vitamin C serum to your regimen to help reverse damage and firm skin, minimize pores, fade dark spots, soften fine lines and wrinkles.

Want that healthy tan? In the summer or year-round, if you are seeking healthy ways to sport a tan on your face or body, (skip the tanning beds) and opt for bronzers or self-tanning sprays and lotions to give you that healthy golden glow.

Let鈥檚 talk skincare. Skin Care Specialists, also known as estheticians, correct past damage done to the skin and work to correct future problems. At 黄瓜社区, we offer multiple programs for aspiring estheticians and specialists that are passionate about skin health and antiaging. And while we believe that proper skin care should be practiced daily on your own, it鈥檚 also important to lean on the professionals to maintain your skin鈥檚 health and elasticity.

Our instructor-led on-campus spa offers a variety of skincare treatments where our students perform the latest treatments including masks, peels, and more to uncover radiantly healthy skin. You can review our spa and salon services here.

Like many people in recent years, skincare has become one of the top priorities in our anti-aging regimen and overall wellness journey. But where does one start if they鈥檙e just beginning to practice proper skincare?

Here are a few emerging trends of 2022 that you can add to your skincare routine to give your skin that healthy glow, in addition to regular visits to your esthetician.

黄瓜社区 Esthetician Giving Facial to Client Boca Raton and Parkland, FL

Sunscreen

That鈥檚 right, sunscreen. While we鈥檝e heard in recent years the ongoing pleas from skincare experts to add sunscreen to our facial routines, it鈥檚 recently become a blanket statement in all conversations involving skincare. The benefits of protecting your face are undeniable: anti-aging, anti-wrinkling, and protects you from harmful UV rays that could lead to an increased risk of skin cancer. And while some people love that warm glow on their face, there are a plethora of self-tanning products out there that will give you the sun-kissed tint you love without the risk. Beauty bloggers, celebrities, and estheticians alike have worked hard to make sure this trend remains at the forefront of everyone鈥檚 mind when they think about skin health.

Skin Care

We offer two intensive programs at 黄瓜社区 for aspiring estheticians to choose from. The original Master Esthetician program takes students through the full breadth of treatments and modalities that have been honed over the centuries. Many of the most popular treatments of today include Oxygen-Infused Facials, Microneedling, Dermaplaning and Body Sculpting.

For skin care, students advise clients on the importance of a healthy diet and proper nutrition to improve skin tone and texture from the inside and out.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is a technique where the body or select regions such as the face, are exposed to cold temperatures for short time segments. You can use tools for this process, such as ice globes or other.
In addition to temporary pore-shrinking, cryotherapy has been known to increase blood flow and oxygen to the face, which can give skin that 鈥済low.鈥 The rush of blood and oxygen to the face can also de-puff the skin and make your face look less swollen.

Apart from these trends, seeing a Skin Care Specialist is always recommended, to help implement a routine that鈥檚 customized to your individual needs.

Interested in being on the other side of skincare?

The Master Aesthetician program is a 24-week program, and the Skin Care program lasts 10 weeks. We also offer a Paramedical Esthetician program which focuses on correction more than cosmetic (read our blog for more details). At 黄瓜社区, our instructors will provide you with the hands-on training, practical spa experience, and specialized knowledge it takes to pursue a successful career as an Esthetician. As a student in this program, you will learn the important techniques and skills needed to become a successful skincare professional.

Here鈥檚 a snapshot of what you鈥檒l learn in 黄瓜社区鈥檚 Skin Care programs:

  • Skin analysis
  • Customized facials
  • Facial massage with alternative massage techniques
  • Hair removal
  • Exfoliation
  • Makeup artistry
  • Facial machines
  • Diet & Nutrition
  • Herbal Therapies
  • The science of product ingredients

The beauty industry is one of the most evolutionary professions with new style trends and procedures for hair,聽skin and nails as well as groundbreaking treatments in massage and skincare. What has always remained a constant in beauty education, is learning the essential methods for cleaning and sterilization in order to maintain a clean and healthy environment for employees and clients.

黄瓜社区 Safety in the Beauty Industry, Barbicide Safe Service Certification

In 2020, those methods came to the forefront of our industry as spas and salons were forced to shut down throughout America and the world. The COVID-19 pandemic instigated reformed protocols that greatly reduce exposure to viruses and bacteria, known as Barbicide Certification.

At the onset of the pandemic, the leadership and educators at 黄瓜社区 set forth to make our academy a safe environment for students and faculty, and to educate on best practices within their fields of study.

Today, 黄瓜社区 has the unique distinction of being the only Institutionally Certified establishment accredited by Barbicide – the world’s foremost leader in disinfection chemicals.

As part of the academy鈥檚 certification, Boca Beauty has incorporated Barbicide鈥檚 safe service course to educate and certify our staff, educators and students on cleaning, proper use of chemicals, safe operations, and the CDC鈥檚 requirements.

What does the Barbicide Safe Service Establishment Certification require?

  • Infection Controls
  • Proper Use & Handling of Chemicals
  • Equipment & Installations for a Healthy Environment
  • Cleaning Protocols (Personal and Environmental)
  • Sterilization Techniques
  • Use of Masks & Protective Guards
  • Safe Practices for Client Treatment and Interaction
  • Use of Disposable Materials
  • and more鈥

The Barbicide Institutional Certification was developed by a team of beauty industry and medical professionals educate our next generation on how to safeguard against infection, and the transmission of viruses.
